'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE THE GAMES

‘Twas the night before the games, and all through the track,
The supplies were all ready, candy canes and Santa’s sack.
The oranges were purchased by Gurney with care,
In hopes that all his athletes would soon be there.

The trackies were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of “good form” danced in their heads.
With their sneakers ready and bags by the door,
They were excited, for it’s the best day of Indoor!

To play these games, you need to be lively and quick,
There’s running, trivia and even some arithmetic.
Faster than cheetahs, Gurney’s athletes they came,
And he cheered and fist-bumped and called them by name:

“Now, Timothy! now, Charlotte! now, Kely and William!
On, Ben! on, Nick! on, Asha and Liam!
Stride to the clock! To the end of the wall!
Now stride away! Stride away! Stride away all!”

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the track,
The coaching and guidance with positive feedback,
As I inspected the canes and was turning around,
Down the runway came the jumpers with one single bound.

They spoke not a word, but went straight to work,
Answering trivia and coming up with excuses as they smirked,
Then Gurney and Rapko totaled the scores,
To see who would go down in Reindeer Games folklore.
